Silver Twinky

Michelangelo is believed to have said that the statue exists already within the marble block. One needs only to chip away all the little pieces that don’t belong. Similarly, I’m hoping that the substantial amount of energy poured into each work will help illuminate the inherent beauty in these otherwise average scenes, culminating in a finished photograph with built in contradictions. At first glance the photographs tend to look “ fake,” like a drawing or computer rendering might appear, because they are “too nice.” Yet the viewer is still confronted with the realization that they are photographic in nature - almost hyper photographic. I strive to create in these small two dimensional worlds of the paper print, a sort of “Other world”, a place the viewer can wander about and explore, or escape for a few moments.

The picture, Airstream Trailer: Home on the Range is not intended to be a cool old retro photograph, rather, it is to me, a new shot of a guy who goes camping out in the desert with cool old retro stuff. Note the satellite dish in the right side of the frame, in shadow. Just two months after this shot was taken, this area of wilderness was scraped and turned into track homes.

This trailer, a 1948 Airstream Trail Wind with a polished art deco look, is part of Doug 's private collection of trailers. He has this and other trailers available as rentals at "Doug's Vintage Trailers. Com . He often goes camping out in the desert with this equipment, and agreed to set up camp just about a half mile from his home, for the sake of our photo.
